Inside Yaquina Head Lighthouse

After exploring the outside of this beautiful lighthouse, we attended a tour of the inside. We saw where they stored gallons of lard that kept the flame going all those years ago. They would carry extremely heavy buckets of lard up the stairs each day to the light. They hired more than one family to keep everything running correctly. It was a very hard and demanding job, the families were kept away from town for long periods of time, so the tour guild described them being  musicians, something to take up most their time.

The view at the top was amazing, but this was as far up as we were aloud to go.
