The Historic Carousel & Museum

“In 2002 the community of Albany, Oregon became interested in creating a hand carved carousel similar to projects recently completed in Missoula, Montana and Salem, Oregon. As a matter of fact it was a visit to Missoula by our board president, Wendy Kirby, that brought the idea of a carousel to Albany. Wendy was attending an Altrusa conference there where the carousel Missoula had done as a part of their downtown’s revitalization was one of that conference’s presentations. This was the spark that began Albany’s journey toward creating truly a one of a kind carousel!”

William and I came across this being advertised at a Del Taco in Albany, Oregon. HAHA! We don’t travel up there often and didn’t know much about the area. Thank goodness I had brought Frank (my Canon) with us that day because what we saw was really amazing! People from all over the west coast travel up and carve these gorgeous animals for a new carousel! On their website they say they’ve spent over 152,000 hours on this project. These people are all volunteers and absolutely incredible! I was so happy to see a few of them working on certain projects when we walked in, they were so friendly and didn’t mind me taking pictures of them 🙂 A gentleman there was from Los Angelas and the rest were from different towns here in Oregon.

It was really a sight to see and I’m so happy we found this treasure 🙂

I asked how long it takes them to carve a character and they said this dragon has taken them 3 years and they are still working on it! Amazing
